Development of a Novel Targeting Strategy for Bacterial Surfaces

My work focuses on cell surface exopolysaccharides of bacteria that differs substantially in structure between species. Exploiting these structural differences would be advantageous to target certain types of bacteria over others for organism selective antimicrobial agents or reagents to detect specific bacteria in the environment. Using colanic acid as a model exopolysaccharide, we can produce the oligosaccharide repeat unit of this sugar polymer. Using this system, we will determine the best strategy for obtaining bacterial selective materials for the design of new targeting agents and bacteria-specific sensors.
