Q. What is required to apply for graduate study at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte?

The following are general guidelines for successful admission into the Ph.D. program in Nanoscale science:

  1. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a science or engineering field relevant to nanoscale science is required for admission to full standing in the Ph.D. Nanoscale Science.
  2. A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or, if the applicant is currently enrolled in a graduate program or has earned a master’s degree, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in a relevant science or engineering master’s program.
  3. Admission to the program will require strong scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the Graduate Record Examination, GRE. The GRE is a required part of the application package.
  4. Three strong letters of recommendation, at least two of which must come from faculty in the applicant’s current or previous academic program. All letters should be written by individuals in a position to judge the applicant’s likely success in a Ph.D. level program. Letters should address the applicant’s suitability for a Ph.D. program and ability to complete the program in a timely fashion.
  5. Admission to the program of students who are not native English speakers will require strong scores on the TOEFL exam. The TOEFL exam is a required part of the application for non-native English speakers.

Q. What documents must be submitted for consideration?

The UNC Charlotte application for graduate admission form along with official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, an official copy of your GRE scores *** (verbal, quantitative, and analytical), Three letters of recommendations, your statement of purpose (an essay that addresses professional goals and motivations for pursuing the degree, suitability for the program, and career goals following the program) and TOEFL scores all must be submitted and received before you application is considered for admission.

***Scores must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). For further information, contact ETS at gre-info@ets.org or http://www.gre.org.

Q. What are your minimum GRE score requirements?

We do not have a minimum GRE score requirement but where an individual may be weak in one area we they should be stronger in another.

Q. What do you look for in an applicant?

We look at an applicant’s entire application package. This includes three strong letters of recommendation; a strong research background and a broad education experience (e.g., a major in Chemistry with a minor in Math or Biology or dual major in biology and physics or an engineering major with a strong chemistry background…) along with GRE scores and GPA.

Q. Do I have to take the GRE?

Yes. Please see the above admission requirements section.

Q. What is UNC Charlotte’s Institution Code for the GRE/TOEFL?

The UNC Charlotte’s Institution Code is 5105.

Q. How can I obtain an admissions application to Graduate School?

Instructions, Deadlines, and Forms for Applying to Graduate School can be found at the following site: http://www.uncc.edu/gradmiss/p_app_instructions.html.

Q. What is the application fee and can it be waived?

The application fee is $55.00 and it must be received before your application can be review for consideration.

Q. I have (or am currently) attending a graduate program, can I transfer credits?

Q.How much does it cost to attend Graduate School at the UNC Charlotte?

Finances are a major concern for many graduate students.  Most graduate students are supported through assistantships and tuition waivers.  Although some students have strong financial support from their family or government, most need to plan carefully for their graduate student years. You can find a detailed list of the fellowships, scholarships, grants, and internships available to you on the following website http://www.uncc.edu/finaid/index.htm. Additionally, the UNC Charlotte offers a detailed break down of tuition and related fees http://www.finance.uncc.edu/Tuition_and_Fees.htm that might be useful when budgeting your finances.

Q. What types of graduate funding is available?

Graduates students are supported by competitive assistantships and tuition waivers.  Please see the following website for more information; http://www.uncc.edu/gradmiss/gs_funding_and_fellowships.html.

You can find a detailed list of the fellowships, scholarships, grants, and internships available to you on the following website http://www.uncc.edu/finaid/index.htm.

Q. Are there required placement exams?

Students will be administered a General Science Proficiency Exam (GSPE) for the purpose of ensuring that students possess a working knowledge of the material needed to master concepts in nanoscale science. The exam will cover introductory material in chemistry, physics, and mathematics (including calculus). It will be administered three times per year, August, January and May and students are expected to take the GSPE each time it is offered until they pass it.

Q. How does and applicant prepare for the GSPE?

The web page for the Ph.D. in Nanoscale Science contains detailed information about the exam, including a list of topics to be covered and sample questions, to assist students in preparing for the exam.

Q. If I meet the required deadlines, when can I expect to receive a decision?

Admission to the UNC Charlotte’s Nanoscale Science Ph.D. program is necessarily a selective process. Prospective students will ordinarily meet the minimum requirements outlined above. The earlier your application is complete and forwarded to the graduate committee for consideration the sooner you will receive a decision.  For the Fall 2007 class we will not have an application deadline.
